Do I HAVE to find my health insurance plan through the Marketplace?

Nope! In fact, depending on your situation, it may be ideal too look at plans outside of the Marketplace!

When it comes to choosing a health insurance plan for yourself or for your family, there are a number of details to consider, including your budget, your physicians, your preferred pharmacies, your health care needs, etc. Finding a health insurance plan that checks all your boxes can feel like trying to put back together a shredded piece of paper.

It can be even more frustrating and confusing when the options on the Marketplace don’t work for you, especially if you don’t qualify for a subsidy or if you have health care needs that require a flexible plan.

But don’t worry! You have options. Better yet, you have help! Health insurance agents are trained, licensed, and certified to assist clients in finding the right plan. They will sort through the clutter and help you find a plan that works well for your situation at no additional cost to you. And their service extends far beyond Open Enrollment. A health insurance agent will manage your policy throughout the year and assist you with any claims issues that may pop up after a visit to the doctor.

What’s the Difference Between On-Exchange (Marketplace) versus Off-Exchange Health Insurance Coverage?

Choosing between on-exchange and off-exchange health insurance depends on your individual circumstances, such as your income, health care needs, and preferences. If you qualify for subsidies and need financial assistance, on-exchange plans may be a more affordable option. If you have specific healthcare preferences or don’t qualify for subsidies, off-exchange plans may provide more flexibility and options.

On-Exchange Plans

On-exchange health insurance plans are purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace, which is a government-regulated platform established by the ACA. Each state has its own Health Insurance Marketplace, and in some states, it’s operated by the federal government.

Depending on your income and household size, you may qualify for premium tax credits (subsidies) that can reduce the cost of your monthly premiums. You may also be eligible for cost-sharing reductions that lower your out-of-pocket expenses.

Off-Exchange Plans

Off-exchange health insurance plans are sold directly by insurance companies or through brokers and agents and often offer a broader range of plan options. These plans can be tailored to specific needs and preferences, allowing you to choose from a variety of coverage levels, provider networks, and cost-sharing arrangements. Off-exchange plans may also offer access to a wider network of healthcare providers, including doctors and specialists, than some on-exchange plans.

Off-exchange plans are not subject to income limits, which means you can choose an off-exchange plan regardless of your income, making them a suitable choice for individuals and families with higher incomes who do not qualify for premium tax credits.
